The Book

Marley Johnnywas Diego-Dylan is a high school junior who breathes in music like oxygen. In the real world, Marley juggles caring for his heroin-addicted mother, upholding his scholarship at a school full of privileged snobs, busing tables to make ends meet, and pining for the beautiful Lea Hall. But in the private world behind his turntables, Marley is free: pulling sounds, adding beats, blending samples, and dreaming of becoming a professional DJ.

When chance lands him his first real DJ job, Marley’s career suddenly skyrockets. Life becomes a blur of clubs, music, and new friends. But when tragedy strikes, will Marley’s dream come crashing back down to earth?
In this music-filled debut, Love Maia brings readers a powerful and inspiring portrait of a boy who follows his passion against all odds.

“Passionate, insightful, and beautifully told.” – Edward Bloor, author of Tangerine and Crusader

“Love Maia spins the perfect mix in DJ Rising. Dreams, ambition, sadness, blooming love, and ultimately hope. I adore this novel. Marley’s beautifully told story will stead your heart.”
– Matt de la Pena, author of Ball Don’t Lie, We Were Here, and I Will Save You

“In a crackling voice that will draw readers into the story and keep them there until the final page, Love Maia skillfully portrays the passion of pursuing a dream, and the difficulties that come with trying to hold on to it.
– Tim Tharp, author of Book Award finalist The Spectacular Now, Falling Dark, and Knights of the Hill Country

“I’ve got a mad beat in my heart for DJ Rising. It goes LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE.”
– Julie Anne Peters, author of National Book Award Finalist Luna, Define “Normal,” and Keeping You a Secret

I read the book, and this story could sure as hell be true, as i know what it is like to be poor, and have an almost unimaginable dream.

I read the book expecting it to be off on all the DJ “etiquette” but it is actually really spot on in my opinion, and i loved how the author incorporated the DJ “politics” on serrato and vinyl and which one belongs in the true DJ world and which one doesn’t. I also loved how the book could connect to anyone like it could connect with someone who had lost a parent or is poor or loves music. i recommend this book to anyone
